Black Stream Waterfalls

Before you see them, you hear the steady rush — a cool ribbon of sound threading through the trees. Above Czerniawa-Zdrój, the Black Stream gathers pace and spills over a sequence of rock ledges, a chain of falls whose combined drop is the greatest in the Izera Mountains. The gorge is intimate rather than grand: mist on moss, water veiling dark stone, shafts of light catching spray. It’s a place that changes mood with the weather, always moving, always slightly out of reach.

Visitors pick their way along the stream on forest paths, stopping where the canopy opens to watch each terrace of water braid into the next. After rain and during spring melt the flow swells and the voice of the falls deepens; in summer the scene sits dappled and green; in winter, ice feathers the rims. Go unhurried, minding slick roots and stone. As you return to the spa town below, the thrum in your ears feels like the Izera Mountains distilled.
