Świeradów-Zdrój is more than the larch Hala Spacerowa and the park's drawing rooms. It's also a hidden machinery of streams, intakes and mill wheels that powered the resort for centuries. A guide to the technical backstage of the former Bad Flinsberg — from Czarny Potok to the Dom Zdrojowy and the Czarci Młyn.

The first thing you hear here is water. The murmur of the Kwisa carries through the valley, and streams join in from side ravines — cold, fast, surprisingly loud. The scent of resin from the larch Hala Spacerowa mixes with the dampness of the morning mist. The spa looks like a drawing room, but it operates like a precise mechanism: a network of intakes, pipelines, mill gear and promenades designed to the rhythm of falls and springs. If you read the terrain closely, you can see the backstage.

A town built by water

Świeradów-Zdrój lies in the Kwisa valley, beneath the northern slopes of the Izera Mountains — here the landforms and hydrology determined the resort’s logistics from the very beginning of its history[1]. Water decided everything: the siting of baths, the drinking pavilions, parks and promenades, the locations of footbridges and bridges, and even where boarding houses would relocate. The network of streams — with Czarny Potok, Świeradówka, Santa Maria and Minotka — supplied not only the moods of flâneurs but also the waterworks. A set of surface and drainage intakes on these flows supplied Świeradów-Zdrój and Czerniawa-Zdrój with utilitarian water for years. Czarny Potok is a left-bank tributary of the Kwisa; its feeders and impoundments appear on the ground as small weirs and bank reinforcements, often covered in moss[3].

The curative legend of the place grew alongside the technology. The first mentions of the extraordinary properties of the local waters appeared as early as 1572 — in a manuscript by Leonard Thurneysser. Later accounts from the 17th century only developed the theme and reinforced the standing of the local acidic springs[1]. Today their taste and smell still “rule” the drinking rooms, but without pipes, valves and well-calculated drops none of this would function.

Czarny Potok: cascades as an engine

You walk into the upper part of Czerniawa-Zdrój and suddenly the forest opens up onto stone ledges. Czarny Potok drops here in short cascades; between them the water strikes mossy boulders, sprays a cool mist and sets the rhythm of your walk. On the stretch above Czerniawa you will find several small waterfalls and a debris-control weir that stops stones racing down the channel. It’s an unassuming detail, but it says a lot: without controlling the rubble, no infrastructure in the valley would have a chance of long life[2].

If you like to read a landscape, look for signs of engineering: stone bank walls, old buried abutments, traces of chutes directing water to a wheel. Even a small groove on a boulder — worn smooth by repetitive motion — is often a key to how water was “worked.” Between the ledges the terrain itself suggested the designers’ routes: promenade paths descended toward the streams or ran along their slopes, so that the guest would “oxygenate” with an even step while passing the elements of this whole watery machinery. Here nothing is decoration without function.

Czarci Młyn: from grain to loaves, driven by wheel and belts

In Czerniawa-Zdrój, on Lwówecka Street, stands the Czarci Młyn. Built of masonry, smelling of grain and oil, it demonstrates the “technological sequence” as clearly as few museums can: from kernel to flour to bread. The mill was erected around 1890, equipped with machines typical of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and organized in the so-called “American system” — with fully mechanized grain transport. Elevators, sifters, triers, cleaners, pipes and bagging machines are spread across four floors, and all movements are linked by transmission belts[4].

What powered it? Until 1951 it was driven by a breast wheel 6.5 metres in diameter — heavy, but sensitive to the stream’s hydrological regime. Then an electric motor took over, and in 1957 a spring flood damaged the weir on Czarny Potok and the mechanical sluices. Today the wheel runs in a closed circuit to demonstrate how it worked, but fragments of the original axle and old timber are still visible in the walls. The mill not only grinds history — it also fed the resort’s appetite, supplying boarding houses with loaves from the oven that is still occasionally fired up during demonstrations[4].

Here you best understand that the resort is an ecosystem: the energy of water drives the mill, flour becomes bread, and bread becomes the ritual of the table. In the display cases you can see photographs of Czerniawa from a hundred years ago, but the most revealing thing is the sound: the steady, engulfing thud of wheels, the creak of wooden chutes, the hiss of meal dust. Children count the teeth on the wheels and guess which belts correspond to which motion. Adults catch themselves thinking that the technology here has a charm that is hard to shelve.

Mini-walk: from cascades to loaf

  • Start at the Waterfalls on Czarny Potok. Listen to the difference in sound between the ledge and the shallows — that is the ear of the “millwright of the land.”
  • Follow the path down beside the stream toward Czerniawa-Zdrój. Look for former bank reinforcements and traces of overflow channels.
  • Enter the Czarci Młyn. In the machinery hall spot the elevators and sifters. Note how the grain “circulates” — by gravity and mechanically — between the floors[4].
  • Finish by sitting by the bread oven. That scent is the finale of the whole orchestra of water, wood and steel.

Dom Zdrojowy: architecture as a device for microclimate

The heart of the resort beats in the Dom Zdrojowy. The present building was erected in 1899 to a design by the Wrocław architect Grosser, on the foundations of the “Dom Źródlanego” that burned down four years earlier. The two buildings are joined by the larch Hala Spacerowa, 80 metres long — the longest in Lower Silesia — whose vegetal polychrome and stained glass filter light like leaves in a tree canopy. Beneath the terraces, along a stretch of roughly 160 metres, lies the “Artificial Grotto” — a former drinking room where water was once poured directly from the intake. At the foot of the terraces the Main Sudeten Trail named after Mieczysław Orłowicz also begins, nicely linking the “salon” with the mountains[5].

The Hala Spacerowa is not just decoration. Its wooden structure regulates acoustics and humidity, the glass tempers the wind, and the warmth and scent of resin create what sanatorium regulations once called “air hygiene.” Pay attention to logistical details: wide passages, the placement of benches, discreet points for managing circulation. Everything here was meant to support movement at an even pace, without drafts or crowding, so that body and breath could work calmly.

How does this “microclimate machine” interact with the water? The simplest place to see it is at the entrance to the drinking room in the Hala Spacerowa: today it functions as a pleasant bar with curative service, but in fact it is a precise node of installations. Water had to be delivered at the proper temperature, with controlled flow, without aeration, and in the rhythm prescribed by physicians. Pipes, valves, drinking fountains and taps were as important as the ornamentation. And if you want to look at this story from an older perspective, walk a little further.

Łazienki Leopolda: a treatment laboratory

A few minutes’ walk from the Park Zdrojowy stand the Łazienki Leopolda — a building erected in 1838–1839 by the Schaffgotsch family at the upper spring. This was a true factory of health: 29 bathtub cubicles fed by “self-pressure”, rain showers, sitz-baths, and later a steam boiler and… a clever installation for evaporating spruce needles to obtain the right aroma and extract for inhalations. Needle baths were introduced here in 1872; modernizations in 1874 added a steam boiler and heating, and later copper tubs and devices for producing cool mist appeared — all solutions tailored to hygiene, microclimate and the effectiveness of treatments[6].

You stand in the hall and hear an echo — different from that in the Hala Spacerowa. Here the sound is shorter, denser, serving discretion and temperature control. Old pipes run in the walls like veins, and the windows, though modest, control the direction and strength of light. It is clear that the architecture thought about people technically: how to warm them, how to ventilate, when to deliver water so that it would be therapy rather than merely a drink.

What to look for in the field: a short checklist for the curious

  • Dom Zdrojowy and the Hala Spacerowa — look underfoot: the arrangement of tiles and boards “guides” movement. Notice the Schaffgotsch coat of arms above the stage and the vegetal polychrome. Step out onto the terraces: the artificial grotto was once a drinking room, and nearby starts the long red trail through the Sudetes[5].
  • Park Zdrojowy — look for small inspection wells and grates; beneath them run channels that once distributed water. At narrow points in the alleys you will find “draft checks.”
  • Czarny Potok — beyond the waterfalls, glance at the banks: fieldstone reinforcements, small thresholds, traces of former channels. The debris-control weir explains why downstream it was possible to risk technical installations[2].
  • Czarci Młyn — in the machinery hall distinguish the elevator (moves grain vertically) from the sifter (sorts fractions). See how the transmission belts distribute power throughout the building — this is the “heart of wheels”[4].
  • In the Kwisa valley — look for traces of former intakes: roofed drain outlets, concrete boxes, sometimes stone walls. Remember that this whole system connected springs, streams and waterworks into a functional network for the town[3].

Three short themed routes

1) Salon and the springs (approx. 90 minutes)

Start at the Dom Zdrojowy: inspect the Hala Spacerowa, go up onto the terraces and look into the “Artificial Grotto” — the former drinking room[5]. Descend into the Park Zdrojowy and slowly loop the paths: you will feel how greenery and architecture work for respiratory comfort. Return to the drinking room in the Hala and taste the water — remembering that behind each glass stand pipes, filters and valves that have guarded its parameters for decades.

2) The energy of streams (approx. 2 hours)

You can reach Czerniawa-Zdrój on foot or by local transport. In the upper part of the valley listen to the cascades of Czarny Potok and spot the debris-control weir[2]. Then descend to the Czarci Młyn — there you will see the same element “translated” into wheel, belts and grain[4]. Finish by sitting at the bread oven: the scent of the loaf closes the loop between water and the resort table.

3) The treatment laboratory (approx. 90 minutes)

From the Park Zdrojowy walk to the Łazienki Leopolda. Compare them in your mind with the Hala Spacerowa: two different answers to the same question about microclimate and hygiene. On the way pay attention to the layout of buildings — many villas and boarding houses sprang up in places where access to water, sun and shelter from the wind had been calculated[6].

This is how you look at Świeradów-Zdrój from the kitchen. Instead of a single picture of a “drawing room in the mountains” you get cogs and springs: streams working on a gradient; wheels turning flow into flour; pipelines leading water to the drinking rooms; halls designed so that light and air had “parameters.” When you leave the Hala Spacerowa, the murmur of the Kwisa will sound different. It is the sound of a mechanism that still works — and still enchants.
